BALLET PHOTOGRAPHY
One of the most fun ways to share and enjoy your ballet journey, is trough photography. There are many ways that you can do this:
- Take your own photos and share them on social media.Use the hashtags #adultballet, #adult ballerina, #transcendnormal, #adultballetinspiration, and any others you come up with.
- Pose for local photographers and photography groups. I did this recently and it was an amazing experience. Not only did I get a ton of amazing photos, I collaborated with great emerging photographers in creating something beautiful.
- Unsplash.com is a great website. It is based on the share economy concept. You can upload your pictures for others to use, and download any pictures taken by others, for free. It is not mandatory, but as a courtesy, if you download a photo and use it, give credit to the photographer. If you post great ballet photos, many people will download them too, and your name will be attached to them. This exposes your journey to the global community in a beautiful way. Photos uploaded to Unsplash.com have been featured in national ad campaigns and more! I have uploaded a few ballet photos to Unsplash.com and so far I have over 10.000 downloads.
- There are other photography projects on the internet, such as @adultballerina project. These are efforts to expand the reach of images of ballet dance taken by individuals to reach a wider audience. Tag them in your social media posts so more people get to see your photos.
- Take photos during and after class, not only when you are "picture perfect". People enjoy seeing your journey, all of it.
QUICK TIPS: Chances are you will not always have a professional photographer around when the inspiration strikes to take a ballet photo. No worries. All you need is a tripod for your smartphone!!. Set the delay for the picture to 10 seconds, and make sure you are in the pose you want in that amount of time! I have taken some of my best pictures this way.
You can also shoot a video of ballet movement and poses, and then take stills from it, but be advised that they will not be the highest resolution. You can still use these for a lot of social media posts and such. The benefit of getting stills from a video is that you get a lot of possible great pictures and you can also make GIFs. The downside is that the resolution is not the highest. For the highest resolution stills, use the delay option.
Even if you do not chose to share your photos, it is still a great idea to take some for yourself; to observe your progress, or simply for the fun of it!
